Goodbye Storyteller – Brad Mehldau

Watching this video moved me almost to tears and I’ll burst if I don’t share it with someone.. The emotion is just so raw and the improvisation wild and bold, but not without structure. The more airy, atmospheric bits are excellent as well in a very understated kind of way. Many label this as a marriage between classical and jazz – think along the lines of Chopin/Debussy/Satie meets Bill Evans/Keith Jarrett sort of thing. Enjoy the video, the interview at the end is also very worth watching. There are 7 parts to this documentary which you can find on Youtube.

I can be very involved in it, and also one part of my brain can be thinking about some really banal stupid shit, like I have to go the bathroom… or you know, did I leave my wallet in the hotel..

  1. I was a lucky man – i was on His concert about month ago. His feel of rhythm, leeft hand, imagination – whoa – even though He didn’t open His eyes for a moment for a while 2 hours – I felt honoured I can hear Him and sit 10 meters from Him.
One of the greatest pianists and artists ever.

  2. very lucky man indeed. i’ve replayed this clip over and over and over.. about half a million times i think. was he in poland for a concert?

  3. so maybe instead of only listening to him try to play something? ;)
yes, he came to poland for, as far as i remember, 5 concerts – with his trio – and it was such a wonderful evening.
you live in london (i’m not sure for 100%), i may say he is more often a guest in your town than in cracow or in my neighborhood ;)
and to sum up – his new record (live – double cd) just rox xD i knew he’s very good at translating rock tracks to the jazz ones, but what he did with black hole sun or wonderwall.. ehhh: mastery

  4. hey paul thanks for posting! yeap i heard a couple of his Radiohead covers. when you said wonderwall, did you mean Oasis’ wonderwall? cos i LOVE that song! shall go search for it on Youtube, hopefully they’ve got a clip.

i’ve really lost touch as far as playing is concerned.. i think i’m quite content just admiring him playing, haha. checked his tour dates on his website, unfortunately he’s touring the USA right now and is only coming back to europe in July.. by which time i wouldn’t even be here anymore! )=
