split screen sadness
so i’ll check the weather wherever you are
‘cos i wanna know if you can see the stars tonight
might be my only right

all the things we’d done together, we never gazed at stars together.
we’d strolled along the Thames on a cool spring’s night, hand-in-hand. or with our arms around each others’ waists, the way i liked best. we’d gotten lost in your car together – oh yes, i will never forget how cross you were then. we’d witnessed night give way to day, amazed at how easy it was to stay awake so long in each other’s company. we’d sat on the floor poring over album after album of your baby photos and faded yellowed photos of your parents in their heyday. we’d linked fingers while watching a movie in bed. we’d stopped to peer into display windows of quaint little antique shops in quiet alleys, way past closing time. we’d shared tubs of icecream, banana and chocolate crêpe oozing over with chocolate sauce onto our hands, the warmth of a duvet, an umbrella in the torrential rain – your arm around my shoulder, your hand shielding my head from the beating rain.
but we never gazed at stars together.
